Table 1 Diagnosis and classification criteria of periodontitis from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in partnership with the American Academy of Periodontology (CDC-AAP)

From: Association between periodontitis and disc structural failures in patients with cervical degenerative disorders

Definition

Normal

No evidence of mild, moderate, or severe periodontitis

Mild periodontitis

It was defined by the presence of periodontal pockets in ≥ 2 interproximal sites with a clinical attachment level of ≥ 3 mm, in ≥ 2 interproximal sites with a probing depth (PD) ≥ 4 mm (for different teeth), or in one site with a PD ≥ 5 mm

Moderate periodontitis

Clinical attachment levels (CAL) were only measured when a periodontal pocket ≥ 3 mm was defined as the algebraic sum of PD and gingival recession (GR). It was referred as ≥ 2 interproximal sites with ≥ 4 mm CAL (not on the same tooth) or ≥ 2 interproximal sites with PD ≥ 5 mm, also not on the same tooth

Severe periodontitis

It was referred as having ≥ 2 interproximal sites with CAL ≥ 6 mm (not on the same tooth) and ≥ 1 interproximal site(s) with PD ≥ 5 mm
