From: Clinical characteristics and risk factors for culture-negative periprosthetic joint infections

Major criteria (at least one of the following)

 Two positive growths of the same organism using standard culture methods

 Sinus tract with evidence of communication to the joint or visualization of the prosthesis

Minor criteria (combined scoring system)

 Elevated serum CRP or D-dimer

 Elevated serum ESR

 Elevated synovial WBC or leukocyte esterase or positive alpha-defensin

 Elevated synovial polymorphonuclear percentage

 Single positive culture

 Positive histology

 Positive intraoperative purulence
