  1. Note that in this study the estimates of the OR of the articles are similar but not identical to those reported by Herlin et al. For individual studies where no discs are reported for a combination of Modic type and pain/no pain, a correction of 0.5 was added to all cells before calculating the OR in this review. For the calculation of the aggregated OR, this correction is not used. Finally, for Kokkonen et al. [30] discs recorded with indifferent pain are not included in the pain/no pain categories
