The effects of cellular phenotype on the chondrogenic capacity in vivo. a In vivo chondrogenic capacity of OA chondrocytes inoculated in type I collagen scaffolds. P1, P3, and P3 chondrocytes (2 × 106 cells/mL) were seeded into type I collagen scaffolds were implanted subcutaneously in SCID mice for 4 weeks to establish a model of in vivo ectopic cartilage formation. The samples were analyzed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), toluidine blue (TB) staining, safranin O(SO) staining, and immunofluorescence staining for type II and I collagen.
