  1. A total of 31 serum samples were collected from subjects (18 male and 13 female) with wounds but no signs of disease, heterotopic ossification negative (HO−). A total of 10 serum samples were collected from heterotopic ossification positive (HO+) subjects (9 male and 1 female). Serum samples were collected at time of surgery. The surgical procedure (or wound) differed between subjects, with the most common procedures being total hip arthroplasty (THA), open reduction and internal fixation, hip revision, and HO excision. Subjects ranged in age from 22 to 83 years old
